How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Open Chess Tactics Puzzles, check the instructions and begin a round. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
