How to play Peg Solitaire

Open Peg Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Read the objective before making your first input. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
